Bermuda Journal
Here is a summary of what I did
in Bermuda.
Saturday, August 16
- Arrived in Bermuda and took a taxi
to the Bermuda Biological Station for Research.
- Got settled into my cottage, Porpoise,
and took a walk around the station. I ran into some wild and some not so
wild animals.
- Met the coordinators of the workshop.
- Went into The Old Town of St. George's
for grocery shopping and dinner.
Sunday, August 17
- Walked from the Station to Whalebone
Bay on the Railroad Trail (about 1.5 miles). Snorkeled in Whalebone Bay
and explored the area. Saw the memorial to soldiers who died of yellow
fever, the Martello Tower and Magazine, Ferry Island Fort, and Burnt Point
Fort. Walked back to the Station.
- Cooked dinner "at home".
Monday, August 18
Tuesday, August 19
- Attended two lectures: Nick
Bates on Global Climate Change and Sheila McKenna on Coral.
- Traveled to Nonsuch Island aboard
the research vessel H.M. Stommel. Had a tour of Nonsuch Island with David
Wingate himself! Took the long way home and got a tour of Castle Harbour.
- Went into St. George's for dinner
and Heritage Night.
Wednesday, August 20
- Went on a guided tour of Bermuda's
Botanical Gardens (quite different from Nonsuch Island!)
- Went on a guided tour of the Bermuda
Aquarium, Museum, and Zoo.
- Cooked dinner "at home".
Thursday, August 21
- Went snorkeling at Tobacco Bay.
- Visited St. Catherine's Fort.
- Worked on research for final project
for course.
- Took picnic dinner to Ferry Reach
to watch the fireworms mate.
Friday, August 22
- Traveled with the kids from the
Coral Camp to North Rock (the northern-most point of the northern-most
coral reef in the world) abaord the H.M. Stommel on rough seas. Snorkeled
at North Rock. On the return trip, dragged the plankton net to capture
some plankton to be studied later.
- Attended a lecture on ocean sediment
studies.
- Went on a guided tour of the Research
Vessel Weatherbird II.
- Went to the home of a prospective
Madeira family for dinner.
Saturday, August 23
- Went to Hamilton, the capital city,
and took the ferry from there to the Royal Naval Dockyard, on Ireland Island
North. Went to the Maritime Museum and took the ferry back to Hamilton.
- Explored downtown Hamilton.
- Went to the Swizzle Inn for dinner
(a very important tourist attraction!)
Sunday, August 24
- Took a walk down the road into
St. George's for one last look at Bermuda's ocean, shore, wildlife, and
culture. It has been a whirlwind tour, but I have learned a lot!
- Left Bermuda for home.
